Mum seemed to never see through it, but I did what was best for Amy, she was a beautiful little thing, and her smile lit up the room, how did Mary not see that. It seemed she did not, as the only bags by the door were hers, she was leaving, and she was going alone. Leaving us to hold the baby. Mum wanted to help, but it seemed it was on my shoulders. She was writing the note when we found her, she never said a word, just picked up her bags and left. The note said, we were take care of Amy, and that she would be in touch.
By in touch, all we got was a letter six months later offering me to become her legal guardian, or she was be taken and put in foster care and later adopted. If anyone was to do that, it would be me; I loved her as my own, and had taken care of her as if she was. She saw me as mum, but I would tell her when she was older who I was.
Everything moved along, the guardianship became official, a week before she turned one. I half expected Mary to come home, celebrate her daughters first birthday. We did not even get a card from her. A week later, mum confided in me, she was ill, she wanted me to legally adopt Amy, because Mary was not ready to be her mother. I wanted that now too, she was my child. The child I took care of, and I wanted to do what my mother wanted me to, she told me it was her dying wish. I had to be strong, as in the months that passed, my mother became frail, she wanted to stay in her home and die. We had no way to contact Mary, I had to let her know, I finally tracked her down, and her reply was what I should have expected, she could not come home, she was moving to Spain to get married and live there with her husband to be.
I could not believe her, mum made no comment about her not being here, she was gone in weeks, and I was left picking up the pieces, but I could not stop, I had Amy to take care of, by now she was toddling. She was growing fast.
The house was left to me, Mary got nothing. The house was paid for, so I was lucky not have to worry; it was how my mum wanted it. She wanted me to take care of Amy. It was also agreed I would not work full time until she went to school full time, and I was enjoying being home with her. That was until Mary turned up one day, with her new husband and wanted Amy. She was nearly two years old.
